【1】Long ago, people connected bright stars in the sky and imagined different shapes. These shapes became constellations. Some people say that the Sumerians first created constellations. However, it is generally believed that shepherds in Babylonia created them about five thousand years ago.
【2】At first, there were twelve constellations. Later, the number increased to forty-eight.
In the seventeenth century, the telescope was invented in the Netherlands. People were then able to observe darker stars that they could not see well before. As a result, new constellations were created in the spaces between the forty-eight constellations.
【3】At that time, people may have had conversations like this whenever they found a new star.
“I found a new star!”
“No, you can't have it. It's mine.”
Until then, the constellations people knew were mostly in the Northern Hemisphere.
