【4】However, when constellations in the Southern Hemisphere became known, creating new constellations became very popular. Why were so many constellations created? One reason was that, until the beginning of the twentieth century, there were no clear rules for creating constellations. Almost anyone could easily make a new one.
【5】At one time, there were as many as 120 constellations. There were so many that people began to get confused. So, in the twentieth century, the International Astronomical Union officially decided on 88 constellations. It also decided where the borders between the constellations should be.
【6】These are the constellations that we know today.
Constellations are often introduced together with myths, so we may think that they belong only to Western culture. However, ancient India and China also had their own constellations.

【４】しかし、今（いま）まで知ら（し　）れていなかった南半球（みなみはんきゅう）の星座（せいざ）が紹介（しょうかい）されるようになると、新（しん）星座（せいざ）作り（づく　）のブームが起こり（お　　）ました。なぜ星座（せいざ）がたくさん作ら（つく　）れたのかというと、二十世紀（せいき）の初め（はじ　）までは、星座（せいざ）を作る（つく　）ことに決まり（き　　）がなく、誰（だれ）でも簡単（かんたん）に作る（つく　）ことができたからです。【５】一時（いちじ）は百（ひゃく）二十もの星座（せいざ）が作ら（つく　）れたことがあり、あまりの多（おお）さに混乱（こんらん）が起きる（お　　）ようになってしまいました。そこで、二十世紀（せいき）になってから、国際（こくさい）天文学（てんもんがく）連合（れんごう）によって、八十八の星座（せいざ）に統一（とういつ）され、星座（せいざ）の境界（きょうかい）も定め（さだ　）られることになりました。【６】現在（げんざい）、私（わたし）たちが親しん（した　　）でいる星座（せいざ）は、このときに定め（さだ　）られたものです。
　星座（せいざ）は、神話（しんわ）とともに紹介（しょうかい）されることが多い（おお　）ため、西洋（せいよう）のものと思わ（おも　）れがちですが、古代（こだい）のインドや中国（ちゅうごく）にも独自（どくじ）のものがあります。
