【7】Chinese constellations seem to have come to Japan around the seventh or eighth century. In Japan, Chinese constellations were used for many centuries, until Western astronomy was introduced during the Meiji period.

People who lived in lands surrounded by the sea also observed the stars when they sailed across the wide ocean. The stars helped them find their position and direction.

Orion is a bright constellation that can be seen throughout the four seasons. People in different parts of the world have given it different names. In Japan, it was once called Tsuzumi-boshi because its shape looked like a traditional Japanese drum called a tsuzumi.
【0】The red star at the upper left of Orion was also called Heike-boshi, and the white star at the lower right was called Genji-boshi. This was because the Heike used red flags and the Genji used white flags.

【７】中国（ちゅうごく）の星座（せいざ）は、七、八世紀（せいき）ごろ、日本（にほん）にも伝え（つた　）られたようで、日本（にほん）では、明治（めいじ）時代（じだい）に西洋（せいよう）の天文学（てんもんがく）が導入（どうにゅう）されるまで、ずっと中国（ちゅうごく）の星座（せいざ）が使わ（つか　）れてきました。∵
　【８】また、昔（むかし）から星座（せいざ）は、時刻（じこく）をはかり、季節（きせつ）の移り変わり（うつ　か　　）を知り（し　）、農耕（のうこう）の時期（じき）を伝える（つた　　）役割（やくわり）を果たし（は　　）てきました。海（うみ）に囲ま（かこ　）れた土地（とち）に住む（す　）人々（ひとびと）は、広い（ひろ　）海（うみ）を航海（こうかい）するときに、星（ほし）を観測（かんそく）して位置（いち）や方角（ほうがく）を確かめる（たし　　　）のにも使っ（つか　）ていました。【９】ですから、星座（せいざ）の名前（なまえ）も、その土地（とち）独自（どくじ）の呼び名（よ　な）が数多く（かずおお　）ありました。
　四季（しき）を通じて（　つう　　）明るく（あか　　）見える（み　　）オリオン座（ざ）は、世界（せかい）各地（かくち）でさまざまな名前（なまえ）がつけられています。日本（にほん）では、その形（かたち）から鼓星（つづみぼし）と呼ば（よ　）れていました。【０】また、オリオン座（ざ）の左上（ひだりうえ）にある赤い（あか　）星（ほし）は平家星（へいけぼし）、右下（みぎした）にある白い（しろ　）星（ほし）は源氏星（げんじぼし）とも呼ば（よ　）れていました。これは平家（へいけ）の旗（はた）の色（いろ）が赤（あか）、源氏（げんじ）の旗（はた）の色（いろ）が白（しろ）だったからです。
　さまざまな想像（そうぞう）をふくらませてくれる星座（せいざ）を、たまには正座（せいざ）してしみじみ眺め（なが　）てみるのもいいかもしれません。
　あれは大きい（おお　　）からお父さん（　とう　　）星（ぼし）。あっちはきれいだからお母さん（　かあ　　）星（ぼし）。これはしょっぱいから梅干し（うめぼ　）。ここにある長い（なが　）のは物干し（ものほ　）。頭（あたま）にかぶっているのはただの帽子（ぼうし）。
