第一段落は、最初のペンギンについての説明。
「ペンギンは面白い生態を持っていて一羽のペンギンが水の中に飛び込むまで他のペンギンは飛び込もうとしないそうだ。しかし、一羽が飛び込むと他のペンギンたちも次々と飛び込む。つまり、初めてやる人がいれば、続く人は出てくる。難しいのは誰もやっていないことを始めてやることだ。
、私は自分も将来の生き方として、まだ誰もやったことがないようなことについても、勇気を持ってチャレンジしていけるような人間になりたいと思う。」
第二段落は、方法１。
「そのためには第一に、自分の行動に自信を持つことだ。初めてのことは確かに不安も多いが、やりきるという気持ちがあれば勇気も湧いてくる。昔小学校の遠足で一人だけ迷子になって道が分からなくなったことがあった。しかしそこで途方にくれるだけでなく、周りの人に次々に聞いて行くことにした。すると、遠足の集団の行っている道が分かり元に戻ることができた。途中で諦めていたら、いつまでも解決することができなかったのではないかと思う。」
第三段落は、方法２。
「第二は、勇気を出してチャレンジするためには、事前の調査や準備も必要だということだ。準備不足なのに勇気だけで飛び込んでいくのは無謀ともいえる。先日学校のみんなの前で発表しなければならないことがあり不安だったが、父に聞いてみると、話す内容をしっかり準備していれば自信を持って臨めると言われた。その言葉を参考に、話す範囲以上のことも下調べして臨むと確かに安心して発表することができた。勇気の裏付けになるのは確実な準備なのだ。」
第四段落は、反対理解とまとめ。
「確かに自分がまだ得意でないことやよく知らないことについては、先に行く人のやり方を参考にすることも大切だ。しかし、いつもその他大勢のペンギンのように、みんなのあとに飛び込むようでは自分らしい生き方をしているとは言えない。私もこれからの中学校生活で、いろいろな問題に直面したとき、まず第一に飛び込めるようなペンギンになりたいと思う。」

しかし、科学は、世の中の役に立つとい価値だけで成り立っているのではない。科学が発展したきたのは、役に立つという価値観以上に、科学の進歩自体が人間の知的な喜びであったからである。……」など。
第二段落は、科学を学ぶ意味その１。「私がこれから、学校で学ぶことも、科学の価値になぞらえて考えることができる。それは第一に、社会の役に立つことである。科学者になる人ばかりでなく、ビジネスで活躍する人にとっても、学問は必要である。それは……」など。
第三段落は、その２。「学ぶことの第二の意味は、その学ぶこと自体が人間の喜びであるということだ。だから、例えば、入試に出る科目だけを重点に勉強するというのではなく、自分の関心のあるものを幅広く学んでいくことだ。それによって、自分自身が成長し……」など。
第四段落は、まとめ。「現代の社会は、科学に支えられている。だから、科学を専門の学者の仕事と考えずに、私たち自身もひとりの当事者として考えていく必要がある。そのためには……」など。
