　第一段落は、説明。【１】「日本人は、細かいところにもよく気を配る。自動販売機からお礼の音声が出たり、タクシーのドアが自動的に開閉したり、電車の出発前のアナウンスがくどいほど頻繁に行われたりするのは、日本だけの特色らしい。それがよい面でもあると同時に、日本で作られた製品が、世界のオープンな開発速度についていけず、日本だけの閉鎖的な進化をしてしまう例も多い。その典型的な例が、ガラバゴス携帯と呼ばれる、日本でしか通用しない高機能が盛り込まれた携帯電話だった。」など。
　第二段落は、意見Ａ。「【２】確かに、ガラバゴス化によって、日本が世界の標準についていけなくなることは問題だ。経済がグローバル化するにつれて、技術開発もボーダーレスになってきている。そういう時代には、自社だけ自国だけの特殊な技術を持っていることは、かえって開発のスピードを落とし、コストを高めるマイナス要因ともなる。１億２千万人の日本だけでしか通用しない技術は、７０億人いる世界のマーケットでは不利に働くことも多い。例えば、先の携帯の機能では……」など。
　第三段落は、意見Ｂ。「【３】しかし、ただ世界の標準に合わせていくだけでは、日本独自の文化の発達は望めない。世界標準が最優先されるならば、日本語よりも英語を標準語に、元号よりも西暦を基準に、道路も車を右側通行にするなど、多くの変更が必要になるが、その変更は単に技術的な問題ではなく日本の文化の根管に関わる問題になる。【４】世界がグローバル化する時代だからこそ、それぞれの国が独自の文化を持つことが必要なのだ。……」など。
